Proxy types: residential, datacenter, mobile and ISP
The proxy type determines where the IP address comes from, and that affects speed, price and how websites treat you. Here are the four main types and address rotation.
What is a proxy
A proxy server forwards your requests to the internet on its own behalf. The website sees the proxy's address, not yours. Which address that is depends on the proxy type, and the type determines almost everything else: how much the address looks like an ordinary person's, how fast and stable it is, and what it costs.
To see which address websites currently see, open the IP address check.
Residential proxies
These are addresses of home connections: an internet provider assigned them to real households. To a website, such a request looks like one from an ordinary user in a specific country and city.
When it fits
- Checking how websites and ads look to visitors from different countries.
- Collecting publicly available data from websites that restrict server addresses.
- Tasks where the reputation of the address matters.
Limitations
- Speed and stability depend on the connection and the device the traffic goes through, and may vary from session to session.
- Usually more expensive than datacenter proxies, and billing is often per traffic volume.
- No guarantee against blocks: websites evaluate not only the address but also request behavior.
Datacenter proxies
The addresses belong to hosting providers and run on servers. This is the simplest and fastest type: the connection is wide and stable.
When it fits
- Tasks where speed and a large volume of requests matter.
- Websites without strict protection against automated requests.
- Tests, internal tools and availability checks.
Limitations
- Hosting address ranges are well known, so many websites recognize them and restrict them more often than home addresses.
- For websites with serious protection, this type is often not enough.
Mobile proxies
Traffic goes through a mobile carrier's network, so the address belongs to the carrier. Usually many subscribers sit behind one carrier address, and websites are more careful about blocking such addresses so as not to cut off ordinary people.
When it fits
- Checking the mobile version of websites and services.
- Platforms with the strictest evaluation of address reputation.
Limitations
- Speed depends on coverage and the load on the carrier's network.
- Usually the most expensive type.
- The address may change at the carrier's decision, not by your rule.
ISP proxies
Also called static residential. The address is registered to an internet provider, like home connections, but hosted on server infrastructure. As a result, it has the reputation of a provider address and the stability of a server.
When it fits
- Long sessions where the address must stay the same: user accounts, account management.
- Tasks that need both speed and a more "home-like" address than a datacenter one.
Limitations
- The address is permanent: if a website restricts it, replacing it is harder than switching to another address with rotation.
- Usually more expensive than datacenter proxies.
Comparing the types
A summary of the main properties. The ratings are qualitative: specific figures depend on the supplier and the plan.
The table can be scrolled horizontally.
| Type | Address origin | Speed and stability | Block risk | Cost | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Residential | Home connection addresses assigned by an internet provider | Depends on the connection and the device the traffic goes through; can be uneven | Lower than datacenter: the address looks like an ordinary user's | Usually higher than datacenter; often billed per traffic | Checking websites and ads from different countries, collecting data from protected websites |
| Datacenter | Server addresses owned by hosting providers | High and stable | Higher: hosting ranges are known, and many websites restrict them | Usually the most affordable | Speed and volume, websites without strict protection, internal tasks and tests |
| Mobile | Mobile carrier addresses (3G, 4G, 5G) | Depends on coverage and network load | Low: many subscribers usually sit behind one carrier address, and websites are more careful about blocking it | Usually the most expensive | Checking the mobile version of websites and services, platforms with the strictest address evaluation |
| ISP (static residential) | Addresses registered to an internet provider but hosted on server infrastructure | High and stable, like servers | Lower than datacenter: by registration the address looks like a provider's | Usually between datacenter and residential | Long sessions with a permanent address: accounts, user dashboards, profile management |
IP rotation
Rotation means the address changes by a rule instead of staying the same. It is used to spread requests across different addresses and avoid hitting a website's limits on the number of requests from one address.
- Per request. Each request goes from a new address. Suited to data collection where requests are unrelated to each other.
- Sticky session. The address is kept for the duration of a session or a set period. Needed where the website remembers a login or the user's steps.
- Static address. The address never changes, as with ISP proxies.
Limits of rotation
Changing the address often does not hide other signals: cookies, headers and the browser fingerprint stay the same. If a website sees the same fingerprint from different addresses, that in itself looks suspicious. Follow website rules and the law.
Frequently asked questions
- How do residential proxies differ from datacenter proxies?
- Residential proxy addresses are assigned by a home internet provider and look like ordinary users' addresses. Datacenter addresses belong to hosting providers: they are faster and cheaper, but their ranges are known, and websites restrict them more often.
- What is an ISP proxy?
- It is an address registered to an internet provider, like home connections, but running on server infrastructure. It combines the reputation of a provider address with the stability of a server, and the address itself stays permanent.
- Why is IP rotation needed?
- Rotation changes the address by a rule: on every request or after a set time. It spreads requests across different addresses so that one address doesn't run into a website's limits. If you need to log in to an account, it's better not to change the address.
- Does a proxy make me anonymous?
- No. A proxy replaces only the IP address. The website still sees cookies, browser headers and the browser fingerprint, and the proxy operator sees your traffic if it isn't encrypted.
What to choose
If you're not sure which type you need, describe your task in the chat: what you're doing, on which websites and from which countries. Hopmind will pick a suitable type and calculate the price, and will place the order only after you confirm.
