Proxy not connecting: timeout and connection refused
How to find the cause when the proxy does not open sites, hangs, or gives a timeout or a refused connection.
What you need
The proxy details in the format host:port:login:password from your order and the program where the error occurred.
Quick check
- Make sure the internet works without the proxy: turn the proxy off and open any site.
- Compare
HOSTandPORTwith the order. A common mistake is a space or a line break picked up while copying. - Check the proxy type. The main port accepts HTTP(S); SOCKS5 works only on the separate port, if one was issued.
- Make sure the order is active and has not expired.
- Turn off the VPN and other proxies, including browser extensions: they interfere with each other.
- Try another network (for example, tethering from a phone). Some corporate networks and providers close non-standard ports.
- Check the firewall and antivirus: they may block the program's outgoing connections.
What it means
- Timeout (timed out): the request got no response. Most often the address or port is wrong, the port is closed in your network, or a firewall is blocking it.
- Connection refused: nothing is listening at that address and port. Check the port and the proxy type.
- Unknown host (name not resolved): the address was typed incorrectly or there is no internet.
- Error 407: the proxy was reached, but the login or password was not accepted, see error 407.
When to contact support
If you have gone through all the quick checks and another network did not help either, contact support.
What to include
Include the order number, the time of the error with the time zone, the error text or a screenshot, and the name of the program. Never send the password.
