How to set up a proxy in Telegram
Set up a proxy in Telegram on a phone and on a computer: which type is supported and where to enter the details.
What you need
The proxy is issued in the format host:port:login:password. In the examples below, HOST, PORT, LOGIN and PASSWORD are replaced with your values from the order.
Proxy type
The official Telegram documentation lists two proxy types: SOCKS5 (server and port, login and password optional) and MTProto (server, port and secret). It does not describe support for a plain HTTP proxy, so this guide uses SOCKS5 only. If your order has no separate SOCKS5 port, you cannot connect such a proxy in Telegram using this guide. Ask support.
Setup
- Android: open Settings, then Data and Storage, then Proxy Settings. iOS: Settings, Data and Storage, Proxy. macOS: Settings, Data and Storage, Use Proxy. Desktop (Telegram Desktop): Settings, Advanced, Connection Type.
- Add a new proxy and choose the SOCKS5 type.
- In the server field enter
HOST, in the port field enter the SOCKS5 portPORT. - In the username and password fields enter
LOGINandPASSWORD. - Save and turn on the proxy you added.
The menu item names follow Telegram's documentation and may differ slightly in your version of the app.
Check
- In the proxy list, a connection mark should appear next to the one you added. Telegram may show the response time.
- If there is no mark or it says the proxy is unavailable, double-check the SOCKS5 port, login and password.
Common problems
- Proxy unavailable: make sure you use the SOCKS5 port, not the HTTP one. See proxy not connecting.
- Login and password rejected: see error 407.
- Telegram encrypts message content, but the proxy server sees the connection address and time, so use only your own proxy.
