How to set up a proxy on Android
A proxy for a Wi-Fi network on Android: what you can set up in the system and why the login and password have to be entered separately.
What you need
The proxy is issued in the format host:port:login:password. In the examples below, HOST, PORT, LOGIN and PASSWORD are replaced with your values from the order.
Android limitation
The Wi-Fi proxy in Android settings takes only an address and port, with no login or password. It also applies only to the current Wi-Fi network, not to mobile data, and not all apps respect it. If you need login and password authentication, set up the proxy inside the app (for example, Telegram) or use a client app that supports proxies.
Setup
- Open Settings, the Wi-Fi section, and tap the connected network (or the gear icon next to it). On some versions you need to long-press the network and choose "Modify network".
- Open the advanced settings and find the "Proxy" item.
- Choose "Manual".
- Enter the host name
HOSTand portPORT. - Save the settings.
The location and names of the items differ between Android versions and manufacturers' interfaces.
Check
- Open a browser and go to the IP check.
- If the browser asks for a login and password, enter
LOGINandPASSWORD. If there is no prompt and access is closed, the system proxy does not suit your version.
Common problems
- Sites do not open after setup: check
HOSTandPORT, see proxy not connecting. - The proxy does not work on mobile data: the setting belongs to a specific Wi-Fi network.
- An app ignores the proxy: set the proxy in the app itself, see other app.
- To turn the proxy off, set the value back to "None" in the same item.
