How to set up a proxy in macOS
Set up a proxy in macOS System Settings: protocols, address, port, login and password.
What you need
The proxy is issued in the format host:port:login:password. In the examples below, HOST, PORT, LOGIN and PASSWORD are replaced with your values from the order.
The settings apply to programs that use the system network parameters. Safari and Chrome are among them.
Setup
- In the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Network in the sidebar.
- Choose the network service you use to get online (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and click Details.
- Open the Proxies section. You may need to scroll to find it.
- Turn on Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS). In each, enter the address
HOSTand portPORT. - For each protocol you turned on, turn on Proxy server requires password and enter
LOGINandPASSWORD. - Click OK.
If your proxy has a separate SOCKS5 port, you can turn on SOCKS proxy instead of HTTP and enter HOST and the SOCKS5 port. Do not turn on HTTP and SOCKS together for the same address unless you need to.
Check
- Restart the browser.
- Open the IP check: the address should match the proxy address from your order.
Common problems
- No connection: check
HOST,PORTand the selected network service. The settings are set separately for Wi-Fi and Ethernet. See proxy not connecting. - Authorization error: check the login and password, see error 407.
- To turn the proxy off, turn off the protocols in the same Proxies section.
