How to set up a proxy with Proxy SwitchyOmega

An extension for Chromium browsers and Firefox: proxy profiles with a login and password and quick switching.

What you need

The proxy is issued in the format host:port:login:password. In the examples below, HOST, PORT, LOGIN and PASSWORD are replaced with your values from the order.

The extension does not provide a proxy and does not promise to bypass blocks: it only directs the browser's traffic to your server. The original SwitchyOmega on GitHub is no longer maintained; its continuation with Manifest v3 support is called ZeroOmega, available for Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

Setup

  1. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store, the Edge add-ons catalog or the Firefox add-ons catalog. Links to the current version are in the ZeroOmega repository.
  2. Click the extension icon and go to its settings (Options).
  3. Create a profile (New profile) of the "Proxy Profile" type and give it a name.
  4. In the proxy row, choose the HTTP protocol and enter HOST and PORT. For a SOCKS5 port, choose SOCKS5.
  5. Next to the proxy row, click the lock icon and enter LOGIN and PASSWORD.
  6. Click "Apply changes".
  7. Choose the profile you created in the menu on the extension icon.

DNS leaks

The extension's documentation states that in Chromium, with SOCKS, some DNS requests may bypass the proxy. With an HTTP proxy this does not happen.

Check

  1. Make sure your profile is selected in the extension menu, not a direct connection.
  2. Open the IP check: the address should match the proxy address.

Common problems

  1. The login window appears repeatedly: the details are wrong, see error 407.
  2. Pages do not open: check the protocol, HOST and PORT, see proxy not connecting.
  3. Another extension intercepts the proxy: leave only one turned on.
