How to set up a proxy in Windows 11

Manual proxy server setup in Windows 11 settings: where to enter the address and port and what to do about the login and password.

What you need

The proxy is issued in the format host:port:login:password. In the examples below, HOST, PORT, LOGIN and PASSWORD are replaced with your values from the order.

The Windows system proxy applies to browsers and programs that take the system settings. Some programs ignore them and require their own settings.

Setup

  1. Open Settings and go to "Network & internet", then "Proxy".
  2. In the "Manual proxy setup" section, click "Set up" next to "Use a proxy server".
  3. In the "Edit proxy server" window, turn on "Use a proxy server".
  4. Enter the address HOST and port PORT. If you have both HTTP and SOCKS5 ports, use the HTTP port for the system settings.
  5. Click "Save".

Login and password

Microsoft's documentation for this dialog describes only the address and port; there are no login and password fields. If a browser or program shows a prompt on first use, enter LOGIN and PASSWORD. If there is no prompt and access stays closed, set up the proxy in the app itself or use a browser extension.

Check

  1. Restart the browser.
  2. Open the IP check: the address should match the proxy address from your order.

Common problems

  1. Sites do not open: check HOST and PORT, make sure there are no spaces, and that the "Use a proxy server" switch is on. See proxy not connecting.
  2. The login and password are requested again and again: the details were entered incorrectly, see error 407.
  3. The IP did not change: the program does not use the system proxy; set it up separately, see IP did not change.
  4. To turn the proxy off, turn off the "Use a proxy server" switch in the same window.
