How to set up a proxy in Google Chrome
Chrome uses the system proxy settings; for login and password authentication the SwitchyOmega extension is convenient.
What you need
The proxy is issued in the format host:port:login:password. In the examples below, HOST, PORT, LOGIN and PASSWORD are replaced with your values from the order.
Chrome uses the operating system's network settings, including the proxy, on Windows, macOS and Linux. There is no separate proxy field in Chrome itself.
Setup
- Option 1, system proxy. Set up the proxy in the system following the guide for your OS: Windows 11 or macOS. Restart Chrome.
- Option 2, extension. Install SwitchyOmega and create a profile in it with
HOST,PORT,LOGINandPASSWORD. - If Chrome shows a login and password prompt, enter
LOGINandPASSWORD.
Which to choose
A system proxy affects all programs on the computer. An extension works only inside the browser and lets you turn the proxy on and off quickly.
Check
- Fully close and reopen Chrome.
- Open the IP check: the address should match the proxy address.
Common problems
- The address did not change: see IP did not change.
- The login and password window appears again: the details are wrong, see error 407.
- Another extension controls the proxy and conflicts with the settings: turn off the extra proxy extensions.
